March/April/May 2019 newsletter

♫♬♪♫♬ Greetings from a windy and chilly Cape Town. As I am writing this letter, the 109 km Cape Town Cycle Tour is on — the world’s biggest bike race — and the 50 km head wind that the cyclists have to face is a wild wind. My sister, Shelley, is riding the race and I am holding thumbs she makes in past Cape Point with this awful wind. Once she is past that, she should be ok. Update: She made it — what a ride!

I hope you are well and enjoying the small signs that promise it’s not long to go before the season starts to change around you.

Here in Cape Town, the squirrels are eagerly collecting treats for their pantry. This little baby squirrel (he is fast asleep) was in the middle of the road so he was rescued and the squirrel sanctuary is looking after him in Constantia. Isn’t he too sweet? So trusting, so precious.

The butterflies are plentiful, the bees are enjoying all the pollen, the Proteas and Erica are growing wild up on the mountains above us and the Egyptian Geese have already been to check the garden for suitability for their breeding season. Please follow me on Instagram for all latest updates and news. I also post photos of my hikes around Cape Town there and it’s a good way to stay in touch with me.

Buffel, the Elephant Seal has left the beach (read more about this amazing creature on my Instagram page here) and Sumi was fortunate enough to have a Large-Spotted Genet visit the deck outside her office. They are very shy animals and it was not intimidated by her presence at all. It posed long enough for her to take a few photographs and then it disappeared over the roof into the trees. How special is that? For those of you in the colder parts of the world who will soon be experiencing signs of spring, I am sure that you will be thrilled to see all the new growth and activity around you soon.
