Couching: To form straight lines, this is an ideal stitch. Make the stitch as long as necessary then come back to the starting point. Pull the thread taut and then use tiny stay stitches to secure the thread.
Also useful for interesting stems and branches, basket handles or bicycle spokes.
This is a good stitch to use when the yarn is too thick to thread up on a needle. Use one or two strands of thread and couch in place as shown.
