I asked Sonia to share her embroidery story. She replied:

“My name is Sonia Lacson, and I was born in the Philippines 78 years ago. At 22, I immigrated to America, where I've lived a life filled with creativity and passion. As far back as I can remember, I've loved crafting and fashion. My mother, a master seamstress and prolific crafter, was my earliest inspiration.

As a child, I thought she could do anything, and I guess, as they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I lived in St. Louis, MO, where I married and raised my children. I never stopped creating with my hands, even as a busy parent.

Years later, I moved to Florida and met many like-minded women who shared my passions. After retiring, my friends and I started a sewing and crafting group, which we called the Sassies. We explored various crafts, from sewing and quilting to beading, knitting, and needlepoint. We even took classes in watercolor journaling, and mosaic.

One day in 2010, I stumbled upon Di van Niekerk's books on stumpwork and fell in love with her dimensional embroidery techniques. I bought her books and kits, and the rest is history. Her dyed silk ribbons and threads added a new level of realism to my projects. My studio is a testament to my many hobbies and interests – a mishmash of projects in various stages of completion. I'm determined to finish the stumpwork panels I bought before I get too old.

Thank you, Di, for being an inspiration. Your realistic embroidery techniques always put a smile on my face and everyone who sees them.”
