I have embroidered all my life with no shortage of encouragement from my mother and grandmother, both lifelong embroiders. I have also a love of flowers and the outdoors so I initially trained in horticulture, my first degree in Geography/music and my MEd from the Open University. When not embroidering I’m an Open University Tutor tutoring on the Access courses. The last decade has been spent, along with teaching embroidery, teaching, exhibiting and marketing rag rugging with my kits with the National Trust and at Clovelly to name but a few venues. I have also taught at the WI College, Denman, for a decade with rag rugging and embroidered landscapes. I trained over a decade ago in goldwork Embroidery with the late Hazel Everett and have since been teaching this along with working on developing ideas of combining ribbon embroidery, stumpwork and goldwork. My bi monthly embroidery group has been running at Roundswell Community Centre, Barnstaple, North Devon, England for nearly 4 years but prior to that it was monthly at a local garden centre for 3 years. Students work on a range of projects including goldwork, stumpwork and of course Di Van Neirkerk ribbon embroidery panels. Students receive individual attention as the group size never exceeds 12 and they are working on their own preferred projects. New students always start on the ‘Orange Tree’ from Di van Nierkerk‘s ‘Ribbon Embroidery & Stumpwork’ book even if they have had no embroidery experience at all. Once they’ve completed that and seen what else group members are stitching they’re ‘hooked’. ‘Bottoms Up’ a panel from the ‘Dreamscape’ has recently been completed by two of my students, Helen and Susan. They have incorporated local foliage into the panel and the dog’s red ball in Helen’s panel has enormous sentimental importance as it was created by her mother. It is so rewarding and enjoyable working with my students and watch their skills develop along with producing beautiful embroideries”.You are welcome to contact us if you would like to have Deborah Hasting's details and email address.
