Blog > Gathering Ribbon to Create Interesting Flowers

This picture is honestly one of my all-time favourite ribbon embroidery pieces. Titled Lady in Red it was embroidered by my friend, Karen Nell, from Sedgefield near Knysna on the Garden Route in South Africa. It just lifts my spirits every time I see it

To create a heavier texture among the adjoining flowers, Karen made the Blue upright flowers with the gathered flower method. She used my range of 7mm silk ribbons (numbers  63, 88 and 89 are good choices) and a matching thread.

Have a look at this stitch for how to gather ribbon to create a lovely texture.

For my Bottom's Up design, I used a fine wire to gather the ribbon onto and then I secured the ends after inserting the wire to the back of my work.

In Swan Cottage I used this technique for the yellow flowers.

Where have you used this technique? Would love to see it! You can contact me here.
Have a good week stitching world and hope you will find some time to stitch.
Until next time.
