Today Marina and I want to show you how to make flower stems with wire and silk ribbon. These stems are useful when creating Chamomiles and Daisies, Poppies and many other kinds of flowers.
Cut a length of wire: 10 -13 cm (4 to 5 inches) with old scissors or wire-cutters.
Make a small (5 mm or 3/16 inch) loop on one end of the wire.
Glue the ribbon along its full length. Press one tail of the ribbon to the surface of the glue and pull it through until the end.
Glue should cover only one side of the ribbon along its full length.
Fix the ribbon in the loop and press down to glue in place.
Fold the ribbon or cotton around the wire, with the glued surface facing the wire, and working quickly, wrap the wire.
Make sure the edges of the twisted ribbon or cotton fit neatly alongside each other — the wire should not be visible along the stem itself.
As the glue dries very quickly, before reaching the other end, you may need to add some more glue on the free ribbon to make sure it won’t unfold.
Wrap to cover the wire completely.
Fix the tail with glue and let the stem dry.
Hint: fold the looped end over again to make a small loop in the wire which will fit snugly in the flower a little later.

Making stems from wire To add dimension and structure to a flower, wire can be used to form free-standing stems which are raised off from the surface of the design. This glue must be clear once dried.
