Making stems from wire To add dimension and structure to a flower, wire can be used to form free-standing stems which are raised off from the surface of the design. For each stem  you will need: 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5 inches) of 0.3 mm beading wire 20 cm (8 inches) of green 2 mm silk ribbon no. 25 and a glue stick used for school projects with glue. This glue must be clear once dried.   stem step 1   Cut a length of wire: 10 -13 cm (4 to 5 inches) with old scissors or wire-cutters.    stem step 2   Make a small (5 mm or 3/16 inch) loop on one end of the wire.   stem step 3     Glue the ribbon along its full length. Press one tail of the ribbon to the surface of the glue and pull it through until the end. Glue should cover only one side of the ribbon along its full length.     stem step 4b     Fix the ribbon in the loop and press down to glue in place.   stem step 5   Fold the ribbon or cotton around the wire, with the glued surface facing the wire, and working quickly, wrap the wire.    stem step 6    Make sure the edges of the twisted ribbon or cotton fit neatly alongside each other — the wire should not be visible along the stem itself.     stem step 7   As the glue dries very quickly, before reaching the other end, you may need to add some more glue on the free ribbon to make sure it won’t unfold.  Wrap to cover the wire completely.   stem step 8   Fix the tail with glue and let the stem dry. Hint: fold the looped end over again to make a small loop in the wire which will fit snugly in the flower a little later.   Poppies by Marina Zherdeva in Little Flowers book       Tomorrow we will show you how to make a 3D Chamomile or Daisy.   Hope you enjoyed this free tutorial!   Little-Flowers-Front-CoverTo find out more about our lovely book, you are welcome to read about it here.
