About Securing and Shaping Leaves and Petals

Silk Ribbon Daisies by the talented Marina Zherdeva

Attaching leaves and flowers made with silk ribbon to the background fabric is generally more effective. It is a simple method that helps prevent stitches from becoming misshapen due to regular use on items such as garments, cushions, and quilts. Use this method to reshape  the stitches at the same time.

Silk ribbon can maintain any shape you create due to its sculptural qualities.

To maintain the shape and volume of a leaf or petal, use a thin thread of matching colour on a fine embroidery needle. Make a knot at the long end.

Come up from the back of the work inserting your needle at the tip or the base of the leaf or petal. Catch the edge of the stitch, and insert needle back into the same hole. This fixing thread will be almost invisible in the finished embroidery, and the secured petals and leaves will retain the shape you created. For twisted stems, stitch between the folds of the ribbon.

The daisy petals above are formed using loose puffed ribbon stitches, secured to the background fabric with small stab stitches at the base and tip. Use a thin matching thread to make nearly invisible stitches that will maintain the shape of the petals.

Each looped petal (below) is carefully secured near the yellow centre of the daisy.
