How to make Red Roses from "Lady in Red" Kit embroidered by Karen Nell
Today I want to show you how these beautiful roses were created for our Lady in Red kit.

If you have added ribbon sculpting to your repertoire, then this one is for you. It sounds complicated but simply explained, it’s building a rose from the centre of the flower outwards. This is achieved by adding and attaching petals (cut out from organza ribbon or fabric) around the bead.

This is one of our popular kits embroidered by the super-talented Karen Nell from Sedgefield in South Africa. This is what Karen wrote:
 
To make these roses, you will need sewing cotton or embroidery floss, scissors and embroidery needle.
Plus
Organza fabric or Di van Niekerk’s organza ribbon: in green (colour 24) and red (colour 58, 60 and 62).
Beads: Plastic or glass necklace beads about 5 or 6 mm with large holes for needle to pass through easily.
 
  1. Rose leaves. Make the leaves in ribbon stitch using various shades of green from Di van Niekerk’s range of silk ribbon. The following greens go well with red: 24, 26, 126, 130 and142. Use green organza ribbon colour 24 and cut out some loose leaves. Attach with a matching thread. Optional: use textured wool/yarn to fill in areas between leaves.  Add some veins to some leaves with a complementary green thread and use fly  or feather stitch on top of a few ribbon stitch leaves.

  1. Red Roses. Wrap beads in red thread. Leave a tail to attach. Stitch around the top centre in brown (or yellow) thread to make stamens. Take a tiny stitch. Catch the loop. Continue in a spiral from the centre out. Cut out petals from fabric or ribbon; cut a rectangle of about two fingers by one finger. Exact measurements are not necessary. Round the edges. Singe the edges over a candle holding the petal with tweezers. Make a variety of colours. Use the smaller petals and darker shades to cup around the bead. Stitch to the bead. After a round or two, turn the cup shaped petals to the outside. Attach petals until the rose is large enough. Secure on the design using the bead tail first and then catch the rose all around using matching sewing thread. Add some ribbon stitches in silk or organza ribbon (colour 58 or 62) to fill out the rose.
