Silk Ribbon Embroidery Hint 9 by Di van Niekerk

From a series of handy hints and tips for silk ribbon embroidery to save and keep for your collection. You are most welcome to share with your students or friends.
I will be adding a new card every week until the series is complete.
This is Hint 9…

Stranded cotton is the most used thread for creative embroidery, widely available in hundreds of colours and usually made up of six fine strands which can be separated to create different thickness for embroidery – DMC, Anchor, Cosmo are some of the well-known brands.  Beautiful hand-dyed stranded cotton is available from Chameleon Threads.

Have a look below to see ideas of where thread and ribbon were used successfully to create a beautiful texture.

Contrasting textures in a design create interest. Ribbon and threads are naturally textural – the smooth pure silk ribbons reflect light and are therefore more prominent in the design; the finer, duller threads absorb light and are less noticeable in the design. The different ribbon widths and
thicknesses of threads, as well as the variety of stitches used, all contribute to pleasing contrast. In my books and Box full of Lessons, I do teach you how to combine textures beautifully.

Have a lovely week!

Thread and silk ribbon combined successfully to create a lovely texture. Here one or two strands of the six-strand thread is a good choice for a subtle effect.
